The Crawford Brief
A proposed redesign of the Crawford Building at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, deciding to turn it “Inside Out”. Drawing on the fact that the art school is rarely ever quiet, whilst art galleries are and how students often communicate with each other via physically making their mark on the art school. This triggered a response which encourages a soundscape of creative noise around a central void, connecting several studios, a canteen, and various reflection zones across floors, both in circulation and communication. At the bottom of this spiralling void is a multi-use space inspired by nature and open to the public, accessed via a tunnel as part of a dynamic changing south-facing facade which allows for light control in the southern studios whilst also allowing the option of sharing or privacy to the public street front. This draws the outside in for creative events, whilst letting the art school activity out via a soundscape of creative noise.
